About Us

Hello In 1996 a group of friends who play string instruments had nowhere to play during the summer months as most orchestras and colleges closed.

So we started our own group.

The following year we had a full string orchestra and the following year we had full wind sections, and so it began !!

Now we regularly have up to 40 people attending every week, making music, meeting new and old friends and having lots of fun.

We start mid to end of June and run through to September. We have no limit on numbers and no audition required.

Conductors
We hire in professional musicians as conductors so that whilst having fun, we are still learning.

Previous conductors :-

Stuart Hazelton, John Large, Ben Crick and Aljosa Skorja.

We welcome back our conductor for 2019,  Yanni Daoutis who is currently MD of the White Rose Orchestra (Leeds) and was assistant MD to singing superstar Leslie Garrett on her 2017 tour.

We rehearse on a Tuesday evening from 7.15pm to 9.30pm at Moortown Methodist Church, Alderton Rise, Off Black Moor Road, Moortown, Leeds LS17 5LH

Start date 2019 is Tuesday 2nd July (concert date is 10th September 8 pm start)

Music

Throughout the years we have performed a variety of music from classical, movies, ballet, opera and even some pop music. As long as it sounds good, we play it.

We have also hired in professional soloists including opera singers, ballet dancers, professional soloists (violins, cello, and a string quartet) One year we performed the theme tune from the film "Mission Impossible" complete with self destructing tape recorder !!

We welcome any player with an interest in music from beginers to advance players. Just come along, have fun, pay your money and make music.

At the end of the summer we usually perform a free concert for family and friends
